Battery Enclosures for Oil & Gas

If you think that oil production and solar energy don’t intersect, think again. The petroleum industry has a lot of remote locations. Work camps, rigs, stand-alone oil pumpjacks, survey sites and much more need off-grid power. Whether the power comes from solar, wind, diesel generators – or a hybrid of these – it needs to be stored.

Battery boxes for the oil & gas industry need to meet several criteria:

  • They must provide environmental protection from the elements.
  • they must be secure, to prevent unauthorized access
  • A large percentage will be pole mounted, as well as ground mounted.

In Alberta, field conditions range widely, from near-desert, to near-arctic. Typically EEMAC/NEMA 4 enclosures will provide the environmental protection needed. (NEMA is US based, EEMAC Canadian, but they share the same manufacturing standards. (And to confuse things, the European equivalent is IP66). Any way you choose, the enclosure will need CSA approval. We’ve seen people try to get away with level 3 or 3S protection, usually forgetting that in oil & gas industry, there are frequent wash-downs with a pressure hose.

Protection from the elements keeps things safe and dry, but a temperature control system is still needed inside the enclosure to deal with extreme heat or cold. Battery efficiency is linked to optimum temperature ranges, and staying within that zone is critical. Heating, cooling or both may be required.

Security for battery enclosures doesn’t just mean keeping curious and wandering hands away – it also means keeping them safe. Even if determined intruders they do get inside the box, safeguards help prevent accidental electrocution. Of course they can’t protect against stupidity….

Pole mounting serves several purposes in the wild. It keeps the enclosure off the ground and away from foraging animals (and kids). It helps reduce temperature transfer from frozen ground, and most importantly protects from water runoff. While enclosures are designed to protect from rain – being caught in a flood is usually outside their scope. It also can keep the box accessible – and easily visible – above snow banks in the winter.
